The China Weekly magazine and Maple Women's Psychological Counseling Center (Maple) jointly held their first charity salon in Beijing on April 20 to discuss the issues facing Chinese parents who have lost their only child.

"Compared to foreign parents, Chinese parents are more traumatized after losing their only child because of traditional cultural and family concepts. They need much more time to recover from the loss," said Maple founder Wang Xingjuan.

"Those who have lost their only child feel that their fate is unfair and that they will lose dependence because, traditionally, the Chinese are usually supported by their children when they grow old," said Wang.

"These parents usually blame themselves for losing their child, which leads to a sense of guilt. They will shut themselves off from the outside world and lose their desire to live because they are not understood by society," she said.

These problems are a result of Chinese traditional culture and a lack of respect and understanding from society, she said.

"Maple will open a hotline to serve this group of people and help them recover from the trauma," she said.

Aside from the care and help of society, parents in this situation should adjust physical and psychological conditions to be able to walk out their home to reestablish their psychological world, Wang said.

In China, the number of families to have lost their only child increases by 76,000 every year. In the near future, the total number will reach 10 million.
