Founder of China's first women's NGO Wang Xingjuanwas honored as the 2013 Most Influential Public Welfare Figure in China on December 20, 2013, for her contribution to the development and protection of women and children.
The selection of the 2013 Most Influential Figures in China was launched by China News Weekly. The public voted for candidates who included both individuals and organizations responsible for contributing valuably to China's social progress.
Wang, 83, founded the Beijing Maple Women's Psychological Counseling Center in 1992. The center's core idea is “Influencing life with life,” which refers to the belief that one can use one's own life to improve the lives of others.
The center focuses on researching women, marriage and family issues, such as domestic violence, single-parent families, judicial protection of women's rights and community intervention on family issues. In April 1994, the center held an international hotline counseling seminar and a national hotline training course.
For the past 25 years, Wang has devoted her time and energy to the center despite challenges such as staffing and financial shortages. Her painstaking work was acknowledged when she received a Special Recognition Award at the 2007 Global Leadership Awards, which are distributed to women leaders working to protect human rights, strengthen democracy and increase economic opportunity. Closer to home, she has made a difference in the lives of thousands of Chinese women.
On January 22, 2010, Wang was hailed as one of the 2009 National Top 10 Social Commenweal Stars.
She is still active in women's studies and is tireless in her fight for women's empowerment.
